Foreign Languages
Spanish I
Spanish is a two year program that makes language acquisition a more natural process. In the introductory year one, the purpose of the course is for students to achieve a desirable level of proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish. Reading and conversational activities are also a crucial piece of the student’s language acquisition and evaluation. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Spanish as well as demonstrate cultural awareness. Students should be able to identify himself/herself and others (origin, physical features, and personality characteristics). Express emotions, state of mind and possession. Talk about daily activities using regular -ar ending verbs. Describe locations of people and things and counting
Spanish II
In year two, intermediate content and activities are introduced to the students in thematic units with great emphasis on grammar and vocabulary, such as: Interrogative words, stem-changing verbs, negative and affirmative expressions, formal and informal commands, adjectives and adverbs, reflexive verbs, preterit tense, imperfect tense, demonstrative articles and pronouns, direct-object pronouns, comparatives, future tense, conditional tense, past participle and present subjunctive.
Chinese I
In year one, students are introduced to a beginner’s Mandarin Chinese course focusing on using language to conduct simple conversations, recognizing and writing some high-frequency words using simplified Chinese characters, and some Chinese cultural customs. There will be various projects and hands-on activities in and outside the class which will allow students to explore Chinese culture, holidays, festivals, cooking, and calligraphy, as well as modern Chinese life.
Chinese II
In year two, the course focuses on using Mandarin to conduct more complicated conversations, recognizing and writing some high frequency using simplified Chinese characters. The course also teaches students some Chinese cultures and customs including traditional festivals and holidays. There will be various projects and hands-on activities in the class which will allow students to explore Chinese culture, holidays, festivals, cooking, and calligraphy, as well as modern Chinese life.
Turkish I
Year one is open to students who are interested in learning Turkish language and culture. This course will introduce the language throughout the basic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The purpose of this course is to give students a basic understanding of the language as well as the rich history and culture. The students who complete this stage learn the three basic tenses (past tense, present continuous and future) and the student is able to use them adequately. Also, the student can converse in everyday conversations easily and can ask and answer advance questions. We will have field trips to reinforce communication skills.
Turkish II
In year two, this course will introduce the language throughout the basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The purpose of this course is to give students a basic understanding of the language as well as the rich history and culture. The students who complete this stage learn the three basic tenses (past tense, present continuous and future) and the student is able to use them adequately. Also, the student can converse in everyday conversations easily and can ask and answer advance questions.
